Understanding Generative AI: The Digital Painter

Imagine you’re learning to paint. At first, you mimic your favorite artists, trying to reproduce their masterpieces. Over time, with practice, you create original art inspired by what you’ve seen but distinctly yours.

Generative AI operates similarly. At its core, it’s about machines ‘learning’ from vast amounts of data, and then, akin to our budding painter, they ‘create’ new, original outputs based on that learning.

Instead of brushes and canvases, Generative AI uses algorithms and data. One popular approach is the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). Think of GAN as two artists: one tries to create a convincing forgery of a masterpiece (the generator), and the other tries to detect which one’s the forgery (the discriminator). The forger learns from every feedback, refining their art until the detector can’t tell it apart from the real deal.
